The Future of Us - Jay Asher, Carolyn Mackler The Page SageThe Future of Us and I started out on shaky footing. I'm sure it didn't help that a lot of reviews I read said it was simply okay, but it was also that I was having a hard time relating to Emma and Josh. Emma just seemed selfish and Josh, while significantly better than his narrative counterpart, seemed shallow. Thankfully, though, both characters managed to redeem themselves very quickly and I ended up especialy liking Josh. Emma and Josh's best friends, Kellan and Tyson, are great, too with their on-again-off-again relationship and their antics.Of course, the premise is just so cool. Even if it had been written by someone other than Jay Asher, I would have read it. However, I'm so glad Mr. Asher is the author, and Carolyn Mackler is, too. I've never read anything written by her before, but I soon saw that her writing is just as addicting as her coauthor. I flew through this book, reading it in under three hours. I can't tell you the last time I've done that!The thing about The Future of Us is that it is, in my opinion, much less of a time-warp story and more of a story about the relationship between two friends. It's a coming of age tale, just during a time when there were VHS tapes, dial-up connection, and beepers, instead of the crazy technology we have today. And let me tell you, the 90s nostalgia is so fun! (Especially when they mentioned Alanis Morissette
